Other fishermen that use power haulers might want to fish heavier traps. The COMMERCIAL model trap weighs 19 lb and probably suits the needs of most fishermen. The SPORT and SHORT SPORT model weigh around 9 lb. and probably should have some additional weight added. Numerous methods are available to add weight to your traps. They include using, brick, steel, concrete pieces, or rocks. Neptune recommends using bricks or steel. Common bricks are a low cost option to add weight to your trap. Each brick measures 8"x 4"x 2" and weighs around 5 lb. You would add the number of bricks to suit your needs. No matter how many bricks are used, make sure they are secured in an evenly spaced arrangement. This will insure that trap lands properly. Bricks can be secured with twine or plastic ties. Neptune offers bricks for sale at $.35 each. Steel rods or concrete rebar can be used to add weight to your traps. Rebar weighs around 1.5 lb per foot for ¾" rebar and around 1 lb per foot for 5/8" rebar. Neptune offers pre-cut 33" pieces of rebar to ballast your trap. Weight per 33" piece of 5/8" rod is 2.8 lb and sells for $1.75 each. Weight for the 33" piece of ¾" rod is 4.1 lb and they sell for $2.50 each. |
