  
 Neptune has promoted the use of bait bags for various fish and shellfish fisheries for years. The reason why? The use of bait bags, and the work of the fish, crab, or lobster that pinch and rip at the bag, is instrumental in getting additional fish and shellfish into the pot. In the case of fish, they rip at the bait bag getting little food, yet creating the impression of a feeding frenzy going on inside the pot. This is also called the "burley" effect in other parts of the world. For crab and lobster, bait bags make the bait last longer. While the claws pinch the bag, bits of bait, oil, and other stimuli are released in the current. This creates a path back to the pot for these creatures down current from the pot.
Neptune offers two basic styles of tubular bait bag material, flexible and semi-rigid netting:
Flexible bait bag material comes in a variety of mesh sizes and diameters.

The flexible material* comes in rolls of 1,500 ft and weighs approx. 43 lb. per roll. Cut lengths are also available as well as custom-made bait bags with hog ringed bottoms.

This tubular netting is as tough as it comes. Available in black only, this material is suited for many applications. In the Florida lobster trap fishery, fishermen will put cow hide bait pieces in bait bag pouches they make out of the semi rigid netting. Hog rings are used to secure the bottom of the bag. Various methods are used to secure the top. Some netting is available in 100' rolls, while some is available in 3' pieces. Custom cut sizes, widths, and mesh sizes are available with minimum order sizes.
The rigid material* is available in 3-ft lengths or 100-ft rolls which weigh approx. 13 lb. per roll. Custom-made rigid bait bags are also available with hog rings securing the bottom.
