The Alaska fishery for Brown king crab got underway in mid-August. Fishermen and pot builders have been busy getting their new pots ready. Neptune Cod Triggers are used by virtually the whole fleet to help retain this agile crab species. With rumors of good prices awaiting the fleet, lets hope it's a prosperous and safe season. One of the most demanding fisheries in the world, a limited number of vessels longline their large pots at depths of 500 fathoms. The main Alaskan fishery takes place west of Dutch Harbor in the westward Aleutian Islands. Known for its foul weather, changing currents and strong tides, this area of the world presents a real challenge to even the best of fishermen. The crabs live where the bottom terrain is very rough and uneven. This crab is known to be able to swim and certainly needs this ability to get around its habitat. The pots are longlined in strings varying from 30-50 pots long. The pots rarely land level. One of the big advantages to having Neptune modified pots is that crab don't escape, no matter how the pot lands.
