Fishermen in pursuit of the deep water species commonly known as Chilean Sea Bass have started to experiment with large fish traps to catch this valuable species. Traditionally caught using hooks on longlines, problems exist in getting these large fish to the surface. The long haul up from the bottom makes fish susceptible to predation by whales. Similar to the situation facing Alaskan sablefish longliners, whales have proven very good at locating vessels hauling their longline gear. Fish coming up on a longline are easy pickings for hungry whales and they take advantage of the situation. Fish being brought to the surface in fish traps avoid the whale problem.

Fishermen also have problems with the Toothfish coming off their hooks on their way to the surface. The long ride to the surface and the vessel's motions often rip the hooks out of the mouths of the fish. This not only causes a loss of catch, but is also bad for the resource since a number of these fish are probably already dead or in such a weakened state that they do not survive. Fish caught in traps will stay alive much longer than a fish caught on a longline. The fish trap delivers the fish to the surface alive and in excellent condition.

As with any trap fishery, the use of escape panels is strongly recommended to prevent lost traps from 'Ghost Fishing'. Cotton twine, plain steel hog rings, or galvanic timed releases can be used to activate an escape panel on the trap to prevent the waste of fishery resources.
