Over the past 3 years, Golden crab fishermen in Florida have been using Neptune Triggers in their traps to help retain their catches. The increase in catch rates was dramatic with some fishermen reporting a do ubling of their catches. In conversations with some of these fishermen, it became obvious there was probably an application in the Florida spiny lobster fishery. Neptune Triggers have proven very effective in New Zealand and Australia where a similar spiny lobster is trapped. It was also apparent that Neptune needed to make a road trip to investigate the situation.
Florida fisher men use top entry traps that use a black plastic funnel for an entrance or inward leading wood slats that create a funnel. Neptune purchased a number of the plastic funnels and modified them by attaching its finger units using pop rivets. We call these Funnel Triggers. We also developed various trigger devices using our components. T hese are called Neptune Lobster Triggers. As you can see from the photos, they both are designed to make entrance easy but escape difficult. We gave samples of both types away to numerous fishermen. We also gave samples to our dealers in S. Florida to pass out to their customers. If any S. Florida fishermen are interested in trying out our lobster triggers, please contact us and we will see that you get some triggers to experiment with. Our dealers in the S. Florida include Atlantic and Gulf Fishing Supplies in Miami, the Lobster Trap Factory in Miami, and Cudjoe Sales in Marathon.
"Update on the Florida lobster season. Unfortunately, this past lobster season was quite a bit different than seasons in the past. Many fishermen mentioned it was one of the worst they had seen in many years. This created problems in being able to tell if Neptune's lobster triggers were increasing catches. Everyone is hoping this is just a one-season situation. Some Florida lobstermen have been ordering limited amounts of trigger making materials to try out in the upcoming season. Stay tuned !"
